“The patient and I never wavered in our faith in Science and its proven healing power.”

Healings: What one patient described as a volleyball-sized lump in her lower abdomen was treated with many of the lines from the Creation chapter, in Science and Health, by Mary Baker Eddy. “The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing…”, “Look away from the body into Truth and Love…”, “Detach sense from the body…”, “‘man’s extremity is God’s opportunity’”, are just a few of the citations I worked with during a fairly prolonged but steady treatment. The patient and I never wavered in our faith in Science and its proven healing power. Prayerful protests and quiet listening for the Truth, directly inspired from this chapter, were applied and held to and … the lump eventually completely vanished. So much so, that the patient didn’t know it until one night she realized she slept peacefully on her stomach for the first time in many months.

Other healings include: Shingles, a knee injury, fever, swollen feet, bladder infection, stomach illness, quelling political unrest, silencing back pain, bowel complications, family discord, financial duress and a lot of the quelling of fear and discouragement in cases relating to claims of age and elderliness.

More healing: An emergency high-school lock-down occurred at the same time that a parent of one of the students was visiting our church’s Reading Room and began receiving texts notifying and updating her of the situation. This all started as she had just sat down to ask a few questions about Christian Science. I was immediately able to comfort the parent’s fear and worry with, among other ideas, a direct quote from the chapter on Creation. She left a short while after, confident and assured God was “on the field.” That evening there was an arrest of an armed and disgruntled student, announced as the lead story on the local news, and no harm ever came to anyone.

Working further to enhance and equip this working-mom’s learning of CS to guide and heal her young children has enabled her to do some basic healing work on her own. We worked on allaying acute fears through sharing basic Christianly Scientific truths to protect and defend her children from excessive school health programs and, in this writer’s view, ridiculous dramatizations and education of youngsters about all sorts of diseases.

One citation from Creation has come up quite a bit: “Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality.” (p. 261)  This is not a formula or “go-to” line but has come through prayer and listening and it has been effective in handling many varieties of the concept of body: the physical body, the body politic, the body of work, the student body (in the case of the school lock-down and health scares), etc.
