The benefits are all around us, every day
/Love, as a synonym for God, occurs more times in “Atonement and Eucharist” than in any other chapter in Science and Health. How does this chapter define Love?
“Atonement and Eucharist” defines Love in many ways. Most importantly to me, it describes Love as being both divine and infinite and as being closely linked to Truth and healing. Love demands that we all follow the example of Jesus, who “best understood the nothingness of material life and intelligence and the mighty actuality of all-inclusive God, good” (Science and Health, p. 52:19–21).
What is required to live as a transparency for Love, God?
To live as a transparency for Love, God, we ourselves need to demonstrate the healing power of Love. When we understand this, Mrs. Eddy tells us that we need to be firm and constant. Chapter 14 in Luke advises us to extend our knowledge and practice of Love – a rich feast – beyond friends and family and neighbors, who are likely to recompense this generosity, to the poor and lame who cannot return the favor, “for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just” (Luke 14:14).
Christ Jesus often rebukes rabbinical error. How does a Christian Scientist fearlessly face down popular beliefs that oppose the practice of Christian Science?
We can strive to face down popular beliefs that oppose the practice of Christian Science, not by subscribing to the Mosaic law of “an eye for an eye,” but by knowing “the divine law of Love, which blesses even those that curse it” (Science and Health, p. 30:14). The most powerful way to disarm this opposition is by loving our enemies and by demonstrations of healing.
What are the benefits of building one’s life on the Rock?
The benefits of building one’s life on the Rock are all around us, every day – one might even say omnipresent. As we express unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, and love – that kingdom of heaven that is within each of us – we experience the freedom from sin, disease, and death that is our true heritage.
